Wednesday night at 7:30 The community of Valley City and the VCSU students were given the opportunity to enjoy a fun night of exciting comedy acts. This was all possible because of the VCSU theatre club. The event took place in the Vangstad auditorium at the VCSU campus. Soothing music surrounded the audience as they waited for the acts to start. The best part of the event was the miniscule prices of the tickets. It was very affordable at only four dollars for students and 8 dollars for everyone else.

Will Spotted Bear and Adam Quisnell got the ball rolling. Quisnell is a great young comedian with a promising career ahead of him. The biggest part of the show was a comedian who has already made a name for himself appearing on Comedy central and the late show with Craig Ferguson. This comedian is Bengt Washburn who is originally from Utah, and traveled to VCSU all the way from Germany to treat Valley City with his gift of giving laughter.

Spotted Bear and Quisnell were great and kept the audience entertained the entire time, but Washburn stole the show with his Mormon and marriage jokes. All in all it was a great night of fun and laughter. The VCSU theatre did a great job setting this all up and providing excitement for everyone who attended.

Millage Wears Different Masks before Family Business Decision

We all wear masks. Different masks are put on for different occasions and for different reasons. Masks hide a part of who we truly are and portray a reserved self image. Some can be physically seen and others exist in hiding. However, in Lacey Millage’s case, her masks represent her life before coming back to her roots. Millage, native of Valley City, ND is back from her experimentation in other walks of life than the restaurant business. She wasn’t always aspiring to take over the 35 year old Roby’s diner, but recently hopes to own the family business some day.

Her journey began once she ventured to Rapid City, SD to earn her business degree and a degree in Veterinary work. She worked nearly forty hours a week to earn money for college and has always been a hard worker. Waitressing at her mother’s business in town, managing a gas station, working at numerous department stores and owning her own cleaning business are some of the many different masks she has worn.

When asked why she came back, Millage said, “I came back to help mom with the family business. Vet work is what I really wanted to do, but knew I’d be back.” She currently works at the Valley City Vet Clinic every Tuesday and every other Saturday while helping with the diner.

Roby’s is a fine eating establishment with one of the more unique menus in town. It has a wide range of foods from Mexican, seafood, Italian and American to simple appetizers and a salad bar. When asked what food Millage preferred, she answered number 32. She then went on to explain that it was a hot beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. Zachary Danger Lee, senior at Valley City State University said, “I enjoy going to Roby’s because it is like having a home cooked meal while I’m away at college.” Many students from the Valley City campus have commented on how Roby’s is one of Valley City’s top places to eat because of its variety and service.

Millage and company will be happy to know that the restaurant is well respected and the community really enjoys its aroma. Speaking with Millage in person about the future ownership really showed her passion for the business. She explained that she remembered coming into Roby’s as a toddler, working there from ages 15-18 and it always being a part of her life. Millage has been back for two years now and is crossing her fingers to become the new owner when her mom retires.

Although Millage experimented with many different jobs, the family business called her back to Valley City. It is nice to see that she can live both dreams as she works at the Vet Clinic and helps mom with the business. It was a unique experience sitting and chatting with her about the history of Roby’s and her involvement. If Millage gets the chance to take over, she will be a perfect fit for Roby’s and the community. Best of luck to you Lacey!!!

Enthusiasm for Sports is Not Always the Case

You see it all around the country. Fans jumping from their couches with their friends shouting praise because their team just hit a home run, a football player from the opposite side fumbled, or just because some team player knocked a player from the other team down on the ground. On the mind of those who are not as thrilled about the game is why their family members and their friends get all psyched up for a game and end up giving them headaches from all the screaming.

“I like seeing the big plays, especially when the Packers are making them. The enthusiasm never dies,” says Kyle Hess, a Valley City State University junior, as he wears his Packers sweatshirt and his cheese head, which the Packer fans are known for wearing as they cheer for their team, no matter if it is a live game they are watching or a game on their fancy televisions. He commented more regarding enthusiasm for the game as he states that “even if I don’t shout out loud, I’m still making comments to myself throughout the whole game even if nothing big is happening.”

To gain more understanding in regards to this enthusiasm for all sports, especially when it comes to football fanatics, an academic understanding of what is going on psychologically and sociologically must be taken into account. Jill Devries, one of the instructors at VCSU that instructs students in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, discusses these aspects when it comes to fanatics. In an email interview, she says that “people are emotional about the sports in which they have a vested interest or connection. This connection can come from either attending a university, from friend and/or family, or even wanting to be part of a crowd.”

Both Hess and Devries understand and accept that not all people are emotionally involved in sports. Hess states some people “just don’t care as much as others do.” Devries stated that “it depends on the personality of the person.” People that do not have that enthusiastic zeal about sports as Hess had said earlier simply say they just don’t care. Devries agrees with them. She says that “some people are just more innately expressive than others.” She also said later on in the email interview that sports enthusiasts like being a part of the entertainment of sports. There are also those people that tend to act somewhat inappropriately during sports, just to draw attention.

While these sports tend to drive people into leaping out of their couches at remarkable speed during a great win, it is interesting to note that not all sports enthusiasts act this way. There are also those people who just sit there watching sports simply to watch them. Team support is big, which was rather evident as Hess concluded the interview by expressing his support for his team: “No matter if the Packers win or lose, there is always next week for them to win!”

Performance Review: VCSU Student Recital

On Monday, November 15, 2010 the Valley City State University Music Department put on a general student recital. The recital took place in Froemke Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. which was a cold winter evening. The Auditorium was unfortunately very empty with small groups of people scattered throughout the audience. With twelve scheduled performers one of which dropped out last minute the recital was a decent length of time. The auditorium’s lights were off except for the ones focused on the stage giving the feeling that that’s where everyone’s attention is to be. Although this particular night seemed a bit off for the performers whether they weren’t ready to perform or they were sick and had a hard time reaching some of their high notes.

It wasn’t hard to see that some were more nervous than others. One of the performers looked like they were either about to fall over because they grabbed the piano and lent against it. Although, it could also have been to show emotion, for in this instance it was hard to tell. Most of the singing performers stood in one spot looking stiff as if they couldn’t move. One performer Cassandra Klos, a Soprano, stayed in the same spot but moved from side to side and moved her hands in order to show the emotion that was needed. Unfortunately, one thing I didn’t like was that there were only two or three songs in English. I like to be able to understand what I’m listening to.

The music helps get the meaning across but understanding the words would be helpful. Along with the singers there were three just instrumental songs. Sarah Rhyan played a beautiful song on the piano, giving me the inspiration to pick up the piano again. While Alison Jenson played the vibraphone, percussion instrument expertly, with four sticks instead of two like normal.

I found the recital very relaxing after the long day. Although the small audience was a letdown the overall performance was very good. It was easy to see that the performers put a lot of work and practice into their songs. I would recommend anyone going to the recitals because it is a relaxing thing to do when there is a lot going on.

Nude Models Showing Up at Valley City State University

No drawing class is complete unless there is a nude model sitting in front of the class. For the Spring 2011 school semester, the Art Department is bringing Drawing III to art students so that they have the challenge of drawing the human form. Ever since the early parts of art history, the human form has been shown in many cultures and in many places. People are exposed to the human form when they walk into museums of art as well as other historic places.

Having this experience is drawing some controversy between some students and the art instructors, however. There are students who do not wish to draw the human form because of their morals and religious reasons. The instructors feel otherwise, stating that if students do not draw the human form, they will not be successful as artists in their careers.

Valley City State University junior Jake Leno is one of the art students who feel their values and religious beliefs are being treated unfairly. With a look of worry and concern regarding his future as an art student, Jake started to talk about faith being the single most important thing in his life. Sitting down in his chair in his room, he said, “It’s my belief that a man should not be looking at women in that way. My faith takes precedence over my schooling which makes it hard for me to take the class.”

Leno’s faith and passion for his faith drives him to be uncertain about his future, but the art instructors at VCSU feel that much more is at stake for those students who feel the same way as he does. With the human form being a challenging thing to tackle in any form of art, the art instructors feel that by not having this experience will damage a student’s success in art. Linda Whitney, one of the art instructors at VCSU is passionate about students learning this particular form. In a face-to-face interview as she prepared to make one of her own creations, she states that “the hardest thing to draw is something we know. If the students don’t learn how to draw the human form, they are doomed not to be successful.” She also mentions that the students will not always be drawing the models while the models are in the nude. “Sometimes they will be wearing bathing suits, sometimes clothed. But if you look at art history, it is based on the nude form.”

In any career, there are crucial things for people to learn to do. It seems that in the art world, these things may be things that are going to be a challenge for them to do for any reason, whether it be a question of morals, a question of religion, or it may be something else that drives the art professional to not do. As Spring 2011 approaches in January, students will be exposed to this particular form of art. The question of whether the students will follow through with the course or drop it before it is too late cannot be answered at that moment. But one thing is for certain: There will be nude models sitting in front of them as they draw the human form.

According to a 2009 study done by Wilder Research, on any given night, approximately 760 people are homeless in the Fargo-Moorhead area and almost half are “long term homeless.” “Going Home” a 10 year plan to end homelessness in the Fargo-Moorhead area says this, “Homelessness is not just a social service issue – it is a community issue with serious individual and community costs.” No one understands these costs more than Moorhead resident, Sydney Cote.

Sydney Cote is currently enrolled in the Social Work program at Minnesota State University Moorhead. Cote currently volunteers at the Dorothy Day Food Pantry in Moorhead and works at Red River Human Services Foundation. Dorothy Day Food Pantry is an organization that distributes free food to poor and homeless families in the community. DDFP is also associated with Dorothy Day House of Hospitality Inc., a shelter for the homeless.

“Girl Scouts has been a huge inspiration for me, it was what opened my eyes to see how one person can make such a difference.”

Cote has always enjoyed helping people and once she found out about the growing homelessness rates in the F-M area she was inspired to a life of helping people begin their journey toward self reliance. After graduation she wishes to be involved in helping the homeless and in the future aspires to open a homeless shelter in a community that needs it.

Cote was born in Bottineau, ND to Jeff and Patty Cote. At the age of four her family made the move to Devils Lake. After high school she earned her associates degree from Lake Region State College in Devils Lake. She is now attending MSUM working towards a degree in social work.

The music pounded loudly over the speakers with heavy metal music amping up the crowd in anticipation for the concert to begin. The lights were dim and surprisingly not many people were there. The Danzig concert held in Fargo, ND, at the Venue in the Hub opened with four speed metal bands. There was an open floor for those wanting to do some head banging and partake in the mosh pit. The seating was up a long flight of stairs in a semi-circle overlooking the open floor and stage. Only those over twenty-one were allowed in the balcony area since there were several bars in that area.

The first band Withered appeared to be a band starting out. Their music was garage band quality and there was no set design at all. They only played for about a half of an hour. After a quick set change, Toxic Holocaust took the stage. Their musical sound was overall pretty good, very much like early Megadeth. Marduk came on next with purple, green, and orange lights flashing and face-paint. They seemed to really get the crowd going with special sound effects prior to each song, in a Marilyn Manson/Rob Zombie fashion. The crowd started to get larger as people started arriving for the main show. The fourth and final band before Danzig (the main attraction), Possessed took stage and put on a great show. The back drop of a pentagram on fire was emphasized by smoke and purple lights flashing. The musical sound was great provoking a mosh pit to start on the floor and it seemed that anyone with long hair was flinging it around. The lead singer was a great front man, seemingly undeterred by being confined to a wheelchair.

After Possessed had finished their set, the stage became extremely busy and everything was cleared to make room for Danzig’s set-up. First, came out the two Devil skull sculptures with the drum set on a raised stage in the middle. Purple lights were placed to highlight the sculptures with a red flashing light to make them look as though they were changing shape. Multiple colored lights flashed as the road crew tested and finished the set-up. They finished up and the crowd waited in anticipation for Danzig to take the stage. All evening the Venue slowly filled and the balcony area had become packed and the open floor area was full as well. Then the wait began. The set-up took about a half an hour and everyone expected that the band would come out shortly after. Twenty more minutes passed and a chant began to encourage the band to come out. Fifteen more minutes passed and the whole crowds’ tension could be felt, since most of us listened to the rare interview done on 98.7 with Glenn Danzig and knew that Danzig had cancelled last minute in Minneapolis the night before. Another quieter chant started on the floor, but no one in the balcony area joined in this time. The crowd seemed tense and many seemed about ready to leave after waiting for almost an hour. Then finally Danzig appeared and everyone went crazy. The lights flashed and smoke rose on the stage. Danzig started with songs off their latest album “Dethred Sabouth”. They went on to play for over an hour and a half and ended by singing one of their most popular songs, “Mother.” That seemed to wrap up the show, but after some more chanting the crowd managed to call Danzig back out for two more songs (Dirty Black Summer, and Twist of Cain).

All in all, the concert was a great show. Each band increasingly became better from the sound to the setting. It seemed that the intention was to build up to the big finish. However, this music is not for everyone. It is very hard metal music and anyone that is not open to experiencing different kinds of music would definitely not want to attend this show. But if you enjoy many different genres of music it is a good listen.

8th Grade Girls Basketball in Valley City

December 2^nd was a great night for the Valley City Hi-liners girls Basketball. They played the Kindred Vikings, from Kindred North Dakota. Both teams put in great effort at this ball game. The final score for the evening was Hi-liners 32 and Vikings 21. There was a decent turn out for this game. Both Basketball coaches seemed that they did a good job of coaching the girls. The Valley City coach seemed maybe a little uptight and expected that Valley City should win. The Kindred coach was more laid back and instructed the girls how to play the game better, but seemed that he wanted the girls to win but wanted them to enjoy basketball. For this age group coaches should be more encouraging and not make the team feel that they need to be really competitive and I felt the Viking coach did that. Again the High-liners had a good evening of basketball.

Vikings Fight for a Win against Beavers

Thursday night at the W.E. Osmon Field House in Valley City, the Valley City State University Vikings women’s basketball hosted Minot State University Beavers. The Vikings had to really fight for their 72-69 win over the Beavers.

The Vikings led off to a slow start in the first half working out some cob webs as it was the first game of the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC). From first glance, it would appear Minot was dominating the game under the basket, having four girls with a height of six foot or more verses the Vikings with no player above 5’10”. At one point in the half, Vikings were down 15 with a score of 12-27, but shots from Jacklyn Mitchell, Mandy Johnson, Amanda Brown, and Kristin Bearstail were able to tighten that gap to just 4 at half time with a score of 30-34.

Vikings started the second half strong with Mitchell sinking a three pointer to start it off. The Vikings tied up the score at 41 with 15 minutes 53 seconds left in the game, but the Beavers were able to stay just one step ahead of them until Mandi Bindas made the go ahead basket. This gave the Vikings that extra oomph to finish strong having only 3 minutes left in the game. Johnson extended the lead with 22 seconds left to seal the win at 72-69.

“It was a great game!” says Valley City State University student Margaret Wilson after the game. Amanda Brown, Senior guard for the Vikings was not only one of the top scorers for the Vikings against Minot, but also hit the 1,000 point mark in her career. “That is something to be very proud of and it was fun to be there watching during such a good game,” says Wilson.

The crowd was restless with excitement in their seats through the teeth grinding minutes of the game. Most of them were students and faculty of VCSU, but there were many alumni and friends of Viking Basketball as well. Chad Slyter, instructor at VCSU commented about the game via email, “It was a great home opening win for VCSU, especially to come from behind the way they did. To be down 15 in the first half and come back to pull out a win in the conference opener definitely should be a confidence booster for the team.”

The Vikings improve to 5-4 with 1-0 DAC record and host Dickinson State University tomorrow, Friday, December 03, 2010 at the W.E. Osmon Field House at 5:30 PM.

Devils Lake grapplers can’t overcome six open weights

Devils Lake, ND – Wrestling fans of all ages converged upon the Devils Lake Sports Center Friday night to cheer on the Firebird wrestling program. Valley City capitalized on Devils Lake forfeits and rolled to a 60-12 win.

This was the Hi-Liners first dual win of the young season after falling to Grand Forks Central 40-28 last week. The young Firebirds are still winless after dropping their season opener last week to a talented Fargo South team.

Chris Sommer was the only Firebird wrestler to leave the Sports Center victorious. Sommer started the match with a flurry of points in the first period against Brady Beckman. Eighteen seconds into the second period Sommer picked up 6 team points with a pin.

The dual started at 145 pounds with Devils Lake’s Tommy Good going up against Valley City’s Stephen Radermacher. This match set the tone for Valley City’s win with Good getting pinned with only 5 seconds left in the first period.

The night got worse for the Firebirds: giving up 24 points to the Hi-liners because they couldn’t field wrestlers for the weights 152-189. Sommer then picked up his lone win for the Firebirds. At heavyweight, Jacob Lagasse of Devils Lake lost in 31 seconds to a very good Alex Andel. Andel holds the top spot at 285 in the North Dakota Class “A” Coach’s Poll.

There was a double forfeit at 103, which would end up being the last team points Devils Lake would pick up.

Firebird Jacob Clouse was rolling to a win when an unexpected series of events unfolded. Clouse was up 9-1 on Jackson Lemnus when Lemnus was able to get a reversal and caught Clouse on his back. Thirty seconds later Lemnus was in the middle of the mat with his hand raised high.

Austin Schall of Devils Lake also lost a close match to Zach Doty. Schall was up 1-0 in the second period but was taken down and pinned with only 4 seconds left in the period. Valley City picked up the pin in the last match of the night giving the Hi-liners a 60-12 win.

Devils Lake is young and doesn’t have the numbers of other schools, but some of the younger wrestlers showed some promise. Devils Lake will have some individual success towards the end of the season as these young guys gain valuable experience.

Students Unhappy About Construction

Construction at Valley City State is putting a damper at the beginning of the semester for returning and incoming students this fall. “Getting to classes on time and maneuvering around campus is not an easy task”, said Travis Bomber, Junior at VCSU. This scenario creates a whole mess of issues for the students and campus which may in turn affect the overall college experience.

Bomber commented, “The construction has been quite hectic, first it takes away from parking which crowds the streets then it also makes people have to drive around it wasting more gas than necessary.”

Students on campus were beginning to wonder why the project wasn’t started earlier this summer. Many students said they had been here the entire summer and it didn’t seem like much construction was happening. This is odd as one would think the renovations of the streets would want to be completed when hardly anyone is on campus. Ryan Mehus, golfer and senior at VCSU said, “When you do it during the school year, not only does it interfere with all of the students and teachers trying to navigate around campus, but you’re also running into winter and with snow coming who knows if they will even get it finished in time.”

Numerous students are complaining about the situation day in and day out, constantly wondering when construction will get done and whether or not the outside conditions will allow them to finish. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the project could be stopped and resumed in the spring which wouldn’t sit well with students. Those trying to get to class and work are crossing their fingers that the weather will work with them and not against.

Not only is the construction posing driving problems, but it’s affecting the lives of those who live on campus. Bomber commented, “I've heard the residents of Mccoy complain about the noise waking them up in the morning which causes them to be tired throughout the day.” Students may not only be affected physically, but mentally as well. This could pose problems in the classroom and create a lack of focus for the students. Teachers may not be getting the best attention from those this fall as a shortage of sleep can wear down one’s body.

As the semester winds down, it seems like the construction will be put on hold, for the most part. While the snow is hitting the ground, construction crews are finishing up the projects and reopening streets. The construction was a temporary problem at Valley City State this fall, but students cannot wait for the project to disappear as a whole. However, construction will continue to be a part of the lives in Valley City as the town is still recovering from the 2009 flood. The large machinery took a toll on the streets, but the trade off of saving the town was much more important. Students for the time being will continue bearing with construction crews, but look forward to a normal campus again.

Coping With Homesickness

How do college students deal with being away from home? Also known as homesickness, I would assume every student gets it when they move away to college. Whether it is a distance from home of one hour or half-way across the United States, they all seem to have a similar way of coping.

Katie McBride, four hours from home, and Caitlynn May, 14 hours from home both agree doing “anything to keep me busy helps keep my mind off it” helps. They are both athletes whom agree too, that being part of a team gives you friends and people to hang out with. “It is an automatic family away from home that you can always count on to be there for you,” expresses May.

Campuses have a variety of activities to help students cope with homesickness. They allow them to get out and about, meet new friends and have a great time. Such activities may include dances, performances, comedians, sporting events, and many different clubs and organizations are available as well. Those may include athletics, campus activities board, student senate, Fish and Wildlife Club, etc. Jenna Vrchota, a student at Valley City State University explained that she likes to be involved and being part of different activities not only helps with being away from home, but also feels that doing so, “I can make an impact here”.

Many students receive packages that bring home to them. The packages may include things as simple as a baggie of mom or grandma’s cookies. Many of the students get packages of unopened mail, random goodies, socks (only mom would know what socks you like), food, and whatever you may have forgotten to pack.

Students also use the technology of Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family they left behind. The pictures and commenting, chatting and messaging allow them to feel like they are only on a short vacation, being able to keep each other updated on life.

Audrey Fergel, four hours from home is a nontraditional student whom is not an athlete and deals somewhat the same way. She explains “I call home a lot, and just try to stay busy”. Fergel said she is going to do her best to get into different clubs and try new things to help her stay busy. “I have to force myself to do new and different things”.

When another student, Katie Arnold, attending Bemidji State University which is only one and a half hours from home, was asked how she copes with home sickness, she said “just fine, actually, I haven’t gotten it yet.” Then, out of extreme curiosity, the next question was, “why not?” She responded, “Dunno, I guess I just like it here”. In a follow-up email chat, Arnold still hasn’t been homesick. She says “I did swing dancing and just have a lot of friends. Every once in a while I’ll go home if I want or need to.”

So, everyone does not get homesick, but those that do, cope with it in similar ways, trying to stay busy, hanging out with friends, and getting involved.

The walk over to Foss Hall was a rough one the wind was whipping and snow was blowing on November 19, 2010. But it was only three houses away. I entered the building and went and found my seat in the middle of the audience. At the beginning the audience was starting to fill up around 20 people showed up to the show. Everyone was handed a program to fallow along with the concert and read the English language version on the German songs. The stage was decorated by lights around the hand rail and along the front of the stage. On the stage were a black piano and a Christmas tree decorated with lights and other ointments. The audience was separated throughout the seats and very interactive with people. The light are usually dimmed down, but left on for the audience to read their programs they were given. The soprano singer was Leesa Levy assisted by Jaime Nammingo on the piano. Leesa is the Director of Choral Activities at VCSU where she is also Assistant Professor or Voice for the Department of Music. The two dressed up nice for the event. They were matching Leesa was wearing a blue top and Jaime wearing bluish green top, both dressed up nice for the event. The music was phenomenal sounded great with those to singing and playing great. Half way through there was a short break after looking around everyone was talking about the music and how nice it was. I did see one person sleeping so maybe she was enjoying the music so much that it put her to sleep. After the show Leesa and Jaime came out for one more round of applause and it was over. There are still many events that people can go to and enjoy from the music department and people coming to the event. These concerts are usually students going to school in valley for a music degree and are great to listen to and see what the school can produce.

High School vs. College Athletics

There is a very significant difference between high school and college athletics. Athletics at the college level are much more demanding, both mentally and physically. The seasons can be very long and strenuous. The coaches are generally much tougher on their players then they are in high school. These are some of the reasons many players love it and hate it so much. They want to step up to that next level and become a better athlete than they were in high school. Many athletes make the transition without any hitches, while others are not so fortunate and crumble under the pressure. Collin McIntee is a former high school hockey player making his transition into college hockey. “It’s not easy” Says McIntee when asked about how he was doing with making the transition into college athletics. “I’m not used to playing all year round, I’m only used to the 3-4 month seasons, so it should be interesting to see if I can last.” College athletics are obviously performed at a much higher pace than high school. “Every guy on a college team is one of the best players from a high school team, this makes the competition for a spot in the lineup very tough” says McIntee. The coaches in college are tougher on players for a reason. They want you to excel and play well, but if you don’t you are sure to be riding the pine for a while. This makes the players want to perform week in and week out so they can keep their spot in the lineup. This is a very powerful motivational tool.

There are many obstacles to overcome for athletes who want to compete at the college level. Ranging from injuries, angry coaches, mental toughness, and much more. These obstacles are what makes everyone appreciate college athletes and the hard work they put in to play the sports that they love. They are also what keep 98% of high school athletes from every being a college athlete.

Public Panel to Discuss Devils Lake Outlet Plans

With all of the complex issues, opposing arguments, and multiple levels of bureaucracy involved in the Devils Lake excess water issue, it can sometimes be difficult for citizens to stay afloat, much less to be involved in, or even aware of the latest developments and how they may affect them.

For this reason, the What in the World Is Going On? community – campus organization is sponsoring a panel discussion titled Bridges over Troubled Water? to be held on Tuesday, November 30^th at 7pm in Vangstad Auditorium on the Valley City State University campus. Representatives from agencies involved in the issue will be discussing the Devils Lake outlet plans and their effect on the Sheyenne River.

“I think people have a lot of questions, “said VCSU professor Dr. Julee Russell who is a part of the WITW group. “Water quality is an issue for everyone and it needs to be discussed in a more public way. This kind of an activity gives people a chance to come in and say, ‘hey, this is what I want to know about this,’ and hopefully someone on the panel will be able to address that concern.”

Invited panelists include ND State Engineer Todd Sando, Valley City Mayor Bob Werkhoven, Bill Csajko and Ferris Chamberlin from the Army Corps of Engineers, and VCSU Biologist Dr. Andre DeLorme. Panelists will discuss the different aspects of the issue as well as the latest information and planning details and how they may affect Valley City and its surrounding areas. Following panelists’ remarks audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions.

” I still see issues I don’t always understand,” said VCSU professor Dr. Kay Kringlie who is also a member of the WITW organization, “so I’m looking forward to this personally as well as for the WITW group.”

Pertinent issues to be addressed include: What plans the State Water Commission has for releasing additional water into the Sheyenne River and what these plans might mean to Valley City and its surrounding areas. How sulfate standards will be maintained or changed. And, how water added to the Sheyenne River will affect potential spring flooding, the flood plain, and the cost of flood insurance.

“We are hoping people can come away from this with an increased awareness and a sense of having a say, of participating and being heard,” added Russell. “Its easy to say,’ I don’t like what is going on,’ but it’s another thing to be able to voice your opinions, ideas, or questions in a place where maybe you can get some answers.”

The What in the World Is Going On? community-campus organization has sponsored events regarding current social and cultural issues since 2001.

Piles of gear ready for the morning hunt

The time of year has come, when you start to see blaze orange everywhere! You may see them on clothes lines or hear of people washing them in “Scent Locker” detergent. The night before, there are piles of gear scattered around the house. Dad has the pile by the door, you get the pile by the stairs, and your brother has the pile down stairs.

Hopefully, prior to this week you were out in the woods checking your stands making sure they were safe enough for the upcoming excitement.

While out in the woods, did you may have run into other hunters doing the same? Maybe find they were putting a stand within spitball distance of your own, and wonder what they are thinking “Is that your stand” . . . “Yes” . . . “Do you use it?” . . . “Yes”. It is kind of obvious. What do you say to something like that?!

While out helping fix deer stands and enjoying the warm fall day, Casey Nelson, a frustrated hunter states, “There is nothing we can do about it, because it’s county land.”

Shane Rasely, also a hunter explains what he would do in a situation similar to that, “you don’t do something like that. I’m hunting public land to and I made sure there isn’t a stand anywhere around me”. It is common courtesy to respect a former hunter’s property.

For the first time in your family’s history, on opening morning, struggling to see in the dark, have you stumbled upon a few other hunters on your way to your stand or find they are sitting in your stand? What is your reaction? What do you do in that situation?

In general, a respectful person would do or say the following. If you built the stand, ask them to get down and move, but because it is public land, there is no law that requires them to leave, it would just be the respectful thing to do. Also, avoid getting defensive. They have a gun, and you never know what they are capable of doing in a situation like that. While walking by someone in another stand, try to be quiet, hurry through, and maybe give them a courtesy wave signaling you are sorry to disrupt them. Make sure you have plenty of orange on so they see you and know you are not a target. Whatever you do, do NOT let them know you are making noise and purposely trying to corrupt their hunting because you are mad, even though you really are.

Kim Hanson, an active hunter in Minnesota, sat in her stand in which others had put one next to but didn’t get there till mid-morning, ultimately ruining the hunting for the other people. She walked directly under their stand, waved and climbed into hers. “Within 20 minutes they got down and left” she giggles. “I didn’t mind that I wouldn’t see anything. It was the fact that they realized it was my stand and rude to put theirs so close that made me feel better”.

Trimming a few trees for better visibility

You may think different, but throughout the last few years, many hunters have noticed hunting ethics is not the same as it used to be. It was not only these few people that had their hunting grounds interrupted by other, less respectful hunters this season, there were many others. Field Participates in No Shave

Mustaches, beards and goatees! Men from all over the world are participating in an event that is kicking off Thanksgiving month. An event mysterious to wives, girlfriends and women involved. An event that puts shaving creams and razors away for an entire month. No Shave November has people talking.

The men participating kick off their growth session on November 1^st and don’t stop until the end of November. Plenty of men on the VCSU campus are partaking in the event and are beginning to look grizzly. However, what if a girl were to participate in no-shave November? What kind of looks would she get from the norm? Would she survive?

Amy Field, sophomore at VCSU is relinquishing her feminism for an entire month. Field hasn’t shaved her legs from the beginning of November and plans on seeing it through. She did add that it is just her legs though and everything else is currently kept up. Field doesn’t want people to think that her entire body is covered in hair as that would be gross.

Field said, “It makes me feel a little upset that they just assume that girls wouldn’t participate and it’s a bit sexist.”

The 19 year old has a point. It is uncommon for women to participate in such an event as they are not known for their hair growing abilities. Females are targeted through magazines, commercials and the media to show their feminine side since day one. As they have been learning this at a very young age it can be quite difficult to stray away from the norm. “It’s nice not having to think about shaving, but I get a little self conscious”, said Field. The men in Valley City give Field props for her uniqueness. “My boyfriend is a tish worried about dating a wookie”, said Field. Her boyfriend Logan Becker, pictured with her, admits he admires her courage.

Field is involved with Viking ambassadors, improve club and other extracurricular activities. She shows her Viking colors everywhere she travels and is a proud member of the Valley City Campus. Anyone who knows Amy on campus knows that she is a hoot to be around and is always smiling. She is one of the most remarkable girls on campus and deserves kudos for her always chipper attitude.

Men and women are not measured by hair in society. Their worth is not determined by how many strands of locks they have streaming from their bodies. However, in November, their hair is everything. Those competing are held accountable for not only the amount of hair, but its grotesque quality. Both genders are taking place in No Shave November this Thanksgiving and it is quite the site to see. Don’t forget to ask Amy to show you her prized legs throughout the month of November.

Black Ops is it a Friend or a Foe

Call of Duty 7 Black Ops is the newest game of the century. It’s the seventh game of its kind, but this one was made by Treyarch. All the games are put in some sort of war period. Black Ops is put in the Cold War era. The areas of battles and fighting are set in many locations including Vietnam and Cuba. Black Ops has many types of games to go with it you can play campaign, live multiplayer or even kill zombies. The campaign follows a story line and as its being played you become many different leaders throughout the war. But mostly you play as a guy named Mason and who ended up getting brainwashed and ended up killing many different leaders and didn’t even know what was going. Till the end of the game when the Americans are able to make him snap out of it and realize what he had done.

During multiplayer you play against many other people throughout the world and try to out kill the other opponents. There are also many other games called wager games, were you put down money that you earn in the game. If you place 1^st, 2^nd, or 3^rd you get paid and earn more money to keep playing the wager games. Also you can play with your friends online on private matches and play just them or you could even play with your friends and verse other players. Then finally there is a zombie game. There are three maps made for this type of play you can play with three of your friends or just go in and play with random people that are on. You can have 2 to 4 players and you have to go through the levels and see how many levels you can get through without both of you dying.

But what could be so bad with playing this game. Well according to Stephani Steffen “the game takes away time from things, guys spend 2 to 3 hours on it and could use that time on more productive things. The guys are on it and don’t even know what is going on around them and don’t care they are so into their game I could be yelling at them and would probably still not even look at me.” But according to john Lindstrom “if I wasn’t playing Black Ops I would just be watching TV or on my computer.”

What are the effects of the game on school and homework? Depends on who you are talking to, many none gamers say that people are putting off the homework and skipping classes and playing the game. People don’t do what they need to get done its affecting there life’s. But like John said “he would procrastinate the homework and school by doing other stuff like watching TV.” But like he said why not play video games that I enjoy that are almost real like and have objectives to complete.

Does the game affect schooling and family activities we really don’t know? The game has only been out for two weeks and still is selling off the records. Before the holidays this game could out sell any other games that have taken years to sell that many games. What’s to come next we don’t know and will have to only wait and see.

New Horizons at the Learning Center

The foundation of education doesn’t change, but the way students learn is always evolving. The Learning Center at Valley City State University is proof of this as it undergoes many external and internal changes to accommodate to students more efficiently.

“It’s publicized more, so we have more people than last year,” said Nicole Hedmark, a VCSU student and writing tutor at the center.

The VCSU Learning Center (originally titled the Writing Center) was founded in 2004 and started 2005 to respond to the needs of students with ACT scores lower than 16. Originally, the center only concentrated on writing skills, but now offers help in mathematics, English Language Learners Support, and to Praxis I students. The Learning Center has been through four directors in five years.

The current director is Jodi Shorma, Instructor of English/Learning Center Director, the person credited for making big changes in the center.

“We have had a series of directors whose (sole) job was not to run the learning center,” said Margaret Dahlberg, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, “Joan (Aus, the first director) focused on ELL (English Language Learners); that was her job. Jodi has been hired to run the Learning Center, which makes a huge difference.”

According to Kyle Vareberg, a writing tutor at the center, “The first thing Shorma did to change service was create a concrete schedule of tutors, one that students can follow and know the hours will be the same week after week.” Before, the hours of the center changed daily. With set business hours, Shorma hopes to make the availability of tutors more convenient for students searching for help.

Shorma also implemented student profiles to track which students and what classes were coming to the center. The Learning Center also started making connections between the Learning Center and athletics when Shorma volunteered the tutors to record the hours for athletic team study tables.

“Students at VCSU need to ‘see’ learning and practice learning as a community or social event to prepare themselves for the world after college,” says Shorma.

“Everyone is going to use writing no matter what they are going to do,” said Hedmark, “if you can’t communicate effectively, you’re going to struggle in any field.”

The number of clients utilizing the Learning Center has doubled since spring of 2010. “There are more people aware that we have tutors,” said Oluwatoyin Oladosu, a tutor for international students, “Students come to students, so the tutors understand what a student is going through.”

The center has also undergone physical changes, transforming from a few old tables in the basement of the Allen Memorial Library to a well-furnished setting, including couches and small tables behind dividers.

The Learning Center is still relatively young in comparison other schools’ tutoring programs, but it seems that it is finally hitting its stride. “There are still some kinks to work out,” said Vareberg, “but the Learning Center has survived and is ready to change even more in the years to come.”

On Monday morning the Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress made an announcement to team players that Randy Moss had been sacked.

Moss came on the Football scene as a rookie in 1998 and has made his name well known in the National Football League. He has played for Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, New England Saints, and is now adding another team under his helmet the Tennessee Titans.

Many people question and think the Vikings have made a big mistake, but when talking to both fans of the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers they have said pretty much the same thing, Moss had a lot of character flaws and he needed to go.

Maybe the atmosphere that the Vikings have created is their own fault? Since Brett Favre has come on the scene as quarterback for the Vikings they have gladly given him the right to do as he pleases. Favre, who is allowed to show up when he wants or not at all for practices, has been the leader in this team, and running the Viking camp.

When I sat down with Rhonda Roaldson at the Buff Bar in Jamestown while having a cold beer she had football on her mind Roaldson who is a lifelong Vikings fan has strong feelings about Moss and his character flaws and not keeping his mouth quiet.

“Moss is a self-absorbed glory hog. He’s a talented player with a big mouth, but only works when he wants to and then he can’t get the job done when he wants to work.”

She spoke well of Moss being an outstanding player but, says, “Good luck to the Titans hope they have better luck keeping Moss in check.”

When speaking to Packers Fan Bryan Miller via text messaging I found he had a lot to say about the Vikings sacking Moss.

“Minnesota got what they paid for. Moss has an ego and thinks he is the key to winning a Super Bowl and that any team he is on should be built around him. He developed this from Chris Carter, and now Percy Harvin will be the same way. Moss is a cancer to any team, as well as the league, and football in general.”

Most fans agree that Moss is one of the greatest receivers of all time to play in the NFL, yet he has proven to have trouble controlling this temper and keeping his mouth quiet, but is that any different from other players that have voiced their opinion throughout the years in any sport? Most fans will say players should have the right to voice their opinions, but not against their own team or coaches.

Minnesota was more than happy to see Moss go but the Titans are happy and not going to make the same mistake of passing him up again. In the 1998 draft Titans passed him up, but timing may be everything. The Titans have confidence that with a fresh start he will do great and take their team far in the AFC.

Many fans may feel Moss has a bad attitude, yet he is one of the best players in the league and undeniably of a lifetime in football. All agree it will be interesting to see how well he finishes out this season after being traded for the fourth time.

Artists’ Touch On Wildlife

When you think of wildlife art you may think of pictures or paintings of wildlife, yet there is another type of wildlife art called taxidermy. It takes someone very creative to mold animals into life like works of art.

Trails End Taxidermy is located twelve miles southeast of Bismarck on a family farmstead giving it that wildlife feel. When walking into his shop you can see how much he loves the art of his taxidermy work. The office area is arranged with wildlife mounts from exotic animals to everyday birds, pheasants, ducks, squirrels and fish all on display for customers to admire.

Wes Ennen says, “Spending a lot of time in nature hunting is what drew me to taxidermy because of the beauty of the animals.”

Ennen owner of Trails End Taxidermy has been a taxidermist for 61 years and is a lifelong hunter and outdoors men and has the unique ability to mount animals like they look in nature and he can add the touches that make them look real. Being a hunter is an important factor you need to know the stance, looks and reaction so you can capture that in the mount.

He said, “Not a lot of people want to do taxidermy because of what it involves.”

Many hours are spent on skinning the animal hide. After skinning them you need to remove any fat on the hides. Then on to the tanning process which takes days. After tanning you need to mount the hides on forms and then the creative work comes in, there may be repairs that need to be made. There is countless hours spent to detail whether it be spray painting a fishes design or molding a deer head there is a lot of work that goes in to one mount although, Ennen says, “The long hours are worth it when done.”

The taxidermy business has been a great business for Ennen because he’s doing something he loves but also because he has made lifelong friendships in the customers he has. To show his appreciation for his customers and friends every year Wes has an open house show casing the deer heads he mounted that deer season. This is a time for customers to get together talk about their love of the sport, share stories about their big buck or have their deer head scored to see who has the biggest rack and have a chance at winning a free deer head mount which is worth around five-hundred dollars.

“This is my way to show my customers how much I appreciate their business and the friendships that I have made, I always have a great time at the open house and people really enjoy being able to see what size buck someone else got.”

When speaking with Gail Gordon she says,” I love coming every year to see the mounts Wes has done and he just has the eye for getting everything perfect, I have never been dissatisfied.”

Art can be countless different things and each person may have different taste in what they think art is, For nature lovers and hunters taxidermy is an art to them. Ennen has made taxidermy his art because of his love of nature.

State Bank and Trust is a well known bank that has over 500 employees and even more customers. With multiple locations in the Midwest this bank is the number one choice for most people. With good service, smiles, free checks and free cookies their isn’t a reason why this wouldn’t be the case.

Today, Dean Wegenast is a 73 year old, retired State Bank and Trust man. Although, he is retired he is still the secretary of the board of directors although he only attends board meetings now and is in active. He says that the most significant thing he did in life was, besides marrying his wife was, “working for a brand new bank not know whether it was going to be successful or not and not knowing if I was going to have a job or not. I am proud of how the bank grew from nothing to where it is today.” The uncertainty was their but he stuck with it showing his perseverance.

His first job in Fargo was at a one man office insurance agency. In time the insurance agency through a set of circumstances and happenings changed from an insurance company to a trust company which later evolved in to the State Bank and Trust bank. After explaining it he says, “so that’s how I got into the bank. I was just in the right place at the right time. There were a few years there that I didn’t know if I was going to have a job the next month.” His life then evolved along with the bank. His wife Gail had to say that he has, “very good work ethic. He really likes to do things himself, and he had a hard time designating people to certain jobs.”

Dean’s position on the board was that of the secretary to the board of directors of the bank and the secretary to the bank itself. Both are important jobs for a single person to hold. It shows that, that person has experience and advice that needs to taken into account. When asked why he stayed on the board Dean Responded, “I enjoy it, it keeps me informed on what’s going on and there are still people that I hired working there.” Today, Dean and his wife Gail, like many retired couples retire somewhere warm during the winter months. They chose Fort Myers, Florida as their winter location from mid December to mid May. On the second Wednesday of every month, between December and May, Dean flies in to Hector international Airport in order to attend board meetings until early Sunday morning when he flies back to Fort Myers to escape the cold North Dakota weather.

On the 16^th of October the West Fargo High School student organization DECA went to Applebee’s before it opened to serve pancakes to the locals as a fundraiser. The West Fargo DECA was stationed at the Applebee’s on 13^th avenue with their teacher, Jenna Skaff. This is Skaff’s third year working with the DECA students as a teacher at West Fargo High School. Skaff said that this event is a state wide event and that DECA and Applebee’s are sponsors for the event together. This particular even has been going on for seven years. According to Skaff, DECA used to stand for Distributive Education Clubs of America but now it is just a marketing association for students as the acronym is obsolete.

When asking Skaff why she chose to advise DECA she said, “I was part of a family business and had a strong liking for it. I just want to pour out to others to show how fun it can be.”

This event cost five dollars for the tickets. Ten percent of the money goes in to a statewide scholarship and the rest to the chapter fall leadership.

Talking to senior, Sam Eidenschank, a student at West Fargo High School, she said that she joined DECA because of “the free t-shirts, all the trips, and for the experience.”

DECA is a long standing organization that is well respected and held at a majority of the schools throughout the United States. It’s where kids get to have a good, safe time while helping out others at the same time. Serving the pancakes was only one way they get out and to do something fun while benefiting from it.

DECA was founded in 1946. With this 60 year history, DECA has touched the lives of more than ten million students, educators, school administrators and business professionals. Their strong connection with this organization has resonated into a brand that people identify as a remarkable experience in the preparation of emerging leaders and entrepreneurs.

Looking around the restaurant it wasn’t hard to see that the people there were friends, family, and some returning students sitting down to enjoy the pancakes.

This is an annual event so look for it next year and maybe you too can sit down and enjoy the mouth watering pancakes as well. Chances are Skaff will be there as well, although you may not see her for she prefers to stand watch in the kitchen.

The Intriguing College Life of John Lindstrom

John Lindstrom is a man in many lengths. Just not in his height of being 6 foot 6 inches, but also in his career and choice in Valley City State University. He came in to Valley City in the fall of 2007 to start is knowledge in Fisheries and Wildlife management and to play some football. He has had an enjoyable college experience so far and is on his senior year where is to graduate in the spring of 2011. Throughout the years at college John has learned to respect life more. He has lost many friends from high school and some from the first years of college, but on the up side he has gained many friends, that will become lifelong friends.

He started looking at VCSU back in his junior year in high school, when the coach Lagrand called John and asked if he was interested in playing college football and what his college career goals were. Throughout his senior year he thought about Valley and many other colleges that had either contacted him or he was thinking about. But the one thing that put VCSU over the top is that they just started a Fisheries and Wildlife Management program two years before he started college. John played football till his sophomore year in 2008, because of a plethora of injuries throughout his organized sports career. The one that put him over the top and he decided it was the end of his college football career was a fracture in his foot. But without morning weight lifting and many other football activities they had to do. John can now enjoy his fall hunting of waterfowl and upland birds. According to John, “North Dakota is way easier to hunt waterfowl and was one of the reasons for choosing VCSU.”

He has already worked in two different fields to give him some experience in work. His first job was after his sophomore year in college and it was an avian restoration tech out of The Fisheries and Wildlife Service in Minnesota. There he assisted a Graduate student at looking at waterfowl habitat and judging how it looked. His second job was with the Fish and Wildlife Service in North Dakota where he was a biological science technician. There he worked with waterfowl also, he did nest dragging and counted the number of female’s ducks that flew from their nest and looked at their nest and counted eggs. Moving Forward and Implementing Strategies for All Academic Departments

From looking at the Valley City State University classrooms, it may not be easy to decipher what the next five years is going to bring to the academic departments. The same situation could definitely be implied in the campus’s past, from the start of the college in 1890 by President James Sifton to 2010, headed by President Steven Shirley.

On October 18^th, President Shirley gave the State of the University address, in which he discussed in great detail, the new five-year strategic plan for 2010 to 2015. This strategic plan is known as Success 2015: Moving Forward and Implementation. Each academic department is affected by this five year plan. Gary Thompson, the Dean of the Education Department, cited documents that describe how this particular department is affected by Shirley’s five year plan. The document he provided has two goals for this five year plan. Goal one is to make informed decisions to improve the teacher education program. This will be done by collecting, sharing, and analyzing data, implementing Bush Grant Strategies, and implementing teacher support and the placement system. Goal two is about promoting growth and retention of candidates within their units. In order for goal two to be successful, strategies such as improving student retention and recruiting prospective students to the Education department will be done.

Though these goals are the goals for the Education department, the goals can definitely be applied to the Communication and Social Science department. Shannon VanHorn, the department chair, mentioned in an email interview how Success 2015 will impact her teaching. “The goals give me a grounding point upon which to shape my courses. I need to be accessible to the students, as does my course. I need to learn new things, try out new innovation, and I need to be up-to-date and current in pedagogical and theoretical underpinnings of each course to provide students with strong experiences at VCSU,” she wrote.

The Science Department is also experiencing some impact from Shirley’s strategic plan. Donald Hoff, M.S., an associate professor for the science department, reported about the main goal for the department. “Because of the expanded number of students, we really need improved facilities. The main focus of most of the different science divisions is supporting a new building,” Hoff says. Planning for these improved facilities is underway. Images of what the addition will look like can be found on the second floor of McFarland. Another thing the science department will be looking at for the next five years is environmental factors. Hoff, who is on the environmental committee, reports that they are “spearheading the paper recycling in the departments.” During the interview, he pulled out a box with the label “Paper” written on it. They are no doubt getting environmental awareness out, as Hoff discusses their work with Sodexo. Hoff reports,

“We’ve encouraged the lunchroom to cut the things they have to wash and diminish the amount of throwaway materials.”

As the VCSU campus is impacted by President Shirley’s five-year plan, there will be many more changes and innovations happening to the departments. As Rhoades Science Building goes through their changes, many more changes will be taking place. Even as the Education Department implements their goals, there is no doubt that by 2015, even more changes will be taking place for each and every five year strategic plan. Though the college will go through many new presidents, changes in academics and student life will always be taking place.

Travis Rybchinski

Travis Rybchinski is the Men’s ice hockey coach at Dakota College at Bottineau. He has been very successful at Bottineau, with 5 national titles under his belt already. His teams have won the national titles in 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Rybchinski will surely be looking for his sixth title this season. When asked if he thinks this year will be another title year Rybchinski with a puzzled, unsure look on his face said, “I sure hope so, but we have a very young, inexperienced crew this year, but if we have some of our key guys step up and lead the team like I know they can, I think we can make another honest run at it.”

When asked why this season might not look quite as promising as the previous years’ Rybchinski said “Many of our freshman leading scorers from last years’ did not return for their sophomore year, so we don’t really have any guys with the experience of playing college hockey. That is why it is so tough for junior programs, like us, to be competitive year after year.” Normally Bottineau has players who have at least played junior hockey before joining the team, which brings experience and leadership to the team. This season will definitely prove to be a challenge for Rybchinski and his players.

Assistant coaches Ron Gullet and Jeremy Tweed are still very positive about this years’ team. They have been working very hard to help Rybchinski form this team into the team they know they need to compete in the national tournament. Gullet says, “We have a lot of work ahead of us for us to get where we need to be come tournament time, but I think we have the players we need to get the job done, Travis and I just have to figure out how to get them there and I know Travis is capable.” Sophomore defensemen Jordan Kippen also remains very confident with this years’ team. Being one of the only sophomores to return Kippen has been forced into a leadership role on the team. “I have a lot of confidence in our young team, I know our coaches will do all they can help us out. Coach Rybchinski is a good coach and has been here before so his experience and knowledge gives us a little comfort.”

Rybchinski’s players and fellow coaches seem to have great confidence in him to get things moving in the right direction. He has a lot of big challenges ahead of him, but I’m sure he will handle them with poise and confidence like he always does.

Along with being a good hockey coach, Rybchinski is also just a great guy to have in the community. He helps out with many other organizations , including youth hockey programs, so he is just a stand up guy and a great guy to have around inside or outside the locker room.

The Many Hats of Courtney Henkel

She’s ten minutes late. Courtney Henkel, an active student at Valley City State University, comes bustling through the door of Kolstoe Hall, subtly favoring her left leg.

“Have you been waiting long?” she asks, then goes into a comical story explaining her reason for her lateness, unpacks her sidebag, and prepares to go on duty as a Resident Assistant, one of the many hats she wears. There is hardly an activity that Henkel isn’t involved in. She holds leadership positions on the Viking Campus Activity Board, Student Senate, Theatre Club, Improv Club, and works in the Student Affairs Office.

As she finishes listing off each of her positions, several people come to the front desk at Kolstoe, where Henkel is on sitting on duty. They pepper Henkel with questions before making themselves at home in the front desk area while they wait for her to stop talking.

Even though Henkel holds many positions of influence over student life, she doesn’t think of herself as a role model, believing that students see her as “The Man” instead of a cool parental/friend figure.

“They don’t look up to me, but I feel like they (students) think that they can’t be themselves around me. Like I’m going to nark on them or something.”

Despite Henkel’s allegations that others do not want to emulate her, she relays several stories where she had to help people with their personal problems, even “helping a guy pick between two girls”.

“Courtney is very much a people-person. People just kind of flock to her,” Kyle Vareberg, a student at Valley City State University who has worked with Henkel on a few projects, said.

Although Henkel presents herself is a confident and competent manner, she insists that the journey toward her current state of mind was a long road. After her parents divorced when Henkel was a baby, her childhood was filled with daily bullying about her weight.

“My mom would always tell me, when they insult you, just shoot them back. I used to just ignore the bullies. But it helped to make sure that the friends you had liked you for who you were.”

Henkel’s mother died when Henkel was only 12 years old, and she went to live with her aunt and uncle in Buffalo. She felt as though she’d been “thrown” into a new family where adjusting was difficult for both her and the people she was living with.

Henkel adjusted to life with her aunt and uncle and believes she’s a stronger person because of it. “God never gives you what you can’t handle”, her personal motto. “It’s something I live by and totally believe in. God has a plan for everything.”

When asked why she sometimes noticeably favors one leg over the other, Henkel replied that she hurt her ankle in high school after one of her friends fell on it while they were sledding and it has never fully recovered.

As the interview comes to a close and the last question has been asked, Henkel immediately switches into her role as a VCAB governor, planning the next event and shooting off a couple of e-mails. Every hat that she wears is asks something new of her every day, but switching between each of those hats seems to come just as naturally as breathing.

The Road To Recovery

Stephanie Erlandson has been through more than her fair share of setbacks. Although the Jamestown College sophomore was a three-sport star athlete in high school with state medals and two school records under her belt, a torn ACL took her out of her junior year.

After a year of frustrating recovery and physical therapy, Erlandson was looking to get in shape for her senior year, hoping to get accepted on a college team. Even with her times in the 400 meter dash suffering as a result of her injury, Erlandson was still a sought-after athlete before deciding on Jamestown College. “I was in the best shape of my life,” said Erlandson, “I had cut two seconds off my best indoor 400 time. That’s a lot in track,” she added, “Our 4X400 team had broken the school record. The year was looking good.”

Then, during track practice before the national competition, disaster struck. As Erlandson ran down the mat towards the sandy pit, a piece of the dried foam mat broke off and flew into her eye.

“The dried foam served as a reservoir for the Pseudomonas bacteria. The piece of foam scratched my cornea really bad and I got what is professionally called a corneal abrasion. The Pseudomonas bacteria is an opportunistic pathogen, so over the course of four days, the bacteria infected my eye and because of the severity of the scratch, this happened very rapidly,” said Erlandson.

“The infection caused her eye to swell to the size and shape of a large gumball,” said Patti Erlandson, her mother, “You couldn’t see the color of her eye anymore.”

Her parents drove Erlandson to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where doctors tried to hide their shock at the appearance of Erlandson’s eye. During her daily doctor’s visits, Erlandson was checked by two or three doctors a day. They checked to see if the infection had broken into the back of her eye, preparing to perform an emergency corneal transplant if the infection spread.

“The danger of having the infection in the back chamber of my eye was blindness,” said Erlandson, “Otherwise, we were basically waiting for the infection to clear. They'd check my antibiotic drops to make sure they were still fresh and effective. They were basically anticipating an emergency surgery, which, they were extremely surprised that it didn't have to happen.”

After a couple of months, when it was clear that Erlandson would not lose her sight, the doctors confided in the family that even though their area specialized in cases like this, Erlandson’s was the worst case of a corneal abrasion they’d ever seen and they were amazed that she hadn’t lost her sight.

Today, it has been nine months since Erlandson’s first doctor’s visit. Five months of recovery since her surgery.

“As a person, I am unbelievably more thankful for everything,” said Erlandson, “It was a miracle that I didn't lose my eye sight. It really helped me get a few other things in my life on track and also helped me realize my passion for medicine, reinforcing the fact that I want a profession in the medical field.”

The entire ordeal has taken its toll on Erlandson, who at the time of the accident, was a few days away from the coveted state competition that she and her teammates had earned. During her recovery, she is not allowed to run until she is cleared by a doctor.

“What have I learned about myself? I am not patient, at all,” Erlandson laughed, “But seriously, I have learned that I have more strength than I had ever known. After going for months sleeping a maximum of two hours at a time needing to get woken up for eyedrops, all the while not knowing if I was going to have eyesight the rest of my life, I went through the most physically, emotionally, and spiritually taxing time of my life. And I succeeded. God doesn't give us anything we can't handle.”

Erlandson plans to redshirt for Jamestown track this year and once again join the ranks of the team in her junior year.

Hunting Ethics & Poaching

What does ethical hunting mean to you? By definition, ethics is a system or rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions. In regards to hunting ethics is very important, not only to other hunters but for all animals being hunted.

Jason Scott, district game warden in the Cass and Barnes county area, stated in a phone interview, that he receives calls about illegal activities year round. Scott said, “If people see any illegal activities they can be reported to Report All Poachers, which will reach the state hotline and the district game warden will be notified or you can call the office directly.” If they find the person or persons and they are convicted of the charge, the person who reported the crime can receive up to $1000 reward, but it depends on the crime. The reward is funded by the Wildlife Federation. Scott explained that the latest trend has been is thrill killing, not only the killing of animals but shooting up people’s property. He described a thrill killing incident that occurred a few years back in northwestern North Dakota where several people made up a game giving each player so many points for killing specific animals. Scott said, “They got so many points for a moose, antelope, deer, or whatever else they could kill, and they just left the animals to rot.” Many of the cases unfortunately go unsolved, since there are usually no witnesses, and the animals cannot say who did it. Scott said, “When we do catch the guilty party the punishment depending on the severity of the crime, the convicted person can receive a fine all the way up to forfeiting of equipment used and can lead to having their vehicle and trailers confiscated.” He explained further that some charges carry mandatory fines, depending on if it is a class A or B misdemeanor, as well as, suspension or revocation of their fishing and hunting license or traffic license, and restitution for the animal. Scott said, “The confiscated item are auctioned off about every three yrs and the money is put back into the Report All Poachers program. The meat is donated to several groups, like hunters against hunger and the Salvation Army, if the meat is already processed and packaged. We have also donated meat to the Fargo Red River Zoo for the wolves because it was not able to be salvaged for human use. We really try to do our best so there is no waste.”

Teaching future hunters the proper rules and regulations, as well as proper ethics is something Scott hopes to achieve in his presentations to young people. Scott stated that all his presentations end with ethics because he feels that while the rules and regulations are important, proper ethics are invaluable. The hunter education courses are mostly taught by volunteers that are trained and get certified to teach the course. The presentations are aimed at reaching as many kids as possible. Scott explained there is also an outreach program for kids who don’t come to from a background of hunting. In a e-mail interview Dr. Bob Anderson, professor at Valley City State University, explained, "Students are educated in the importance of hunting ethics in all courses and the impacts of poor thical decisions. Impacts of poor ethical decisions not only impact the individual but, also affect society as a whole." People of all ages have a responsibility to teach and uphold ethics when it comes to our natural resources.
Ethical hunting should not only include hunting rules and regulations but also the respect for nature and all animals alike. Everyone should be able to enjoy nature and animals in their own way, from the hikers and animal watchers, as well as the hunters. We have been given a wonderful natural resource in nature that without our respect can be gone, not only for us, but for the future generations also.

Hugs for Success

It may not be a secret, but not many people know the success of Katie McBride as a Fastpitch Softball pitcher. McBride was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and has been around athletics her entire life. Her dad, Bill, was the local college football coach, is still the softball coach; and McBride’s mom is the manager for the local YMCA. McBride has grown up as an athlete. Not only has she played softball all her life, but she was also in volleyball till her sophomore year in high school and played basketball through her sophomore year in college.

McBride was part of a very successful summer softball program, with her dad as the coach. She has won numerous first place state tournaments and has been to a national tournament five times. Two in which her team took 3^rd place and in the summer of 2008 they were National Champions! “It was very unexpected! We lost our first actual tournament game and had to win 10 in a row to take the ‘ship. That’s about four games a day in 100 or more degree weather in Kansas City,” smiles McBride shaking her head, “I still can’t believe it really happened.”

“Katie is quite the pitcher, but what makes her “special” is her red hair and her great personality!” laughs Jenna Johannsen, good friend and former teammate of McBride. McBride has a personality that allows her to be picked on quite often, but she plays the game as if it were the softball field, she always picks back and absolutely loves it! She is extremely easy to get along with, being Facebook friends with the majority of her opponents. “We don’t know each other on the field, but when the game is over, here come the hugs and laughs,” says McBride. She admits she loves getting hugs, and not weak ones either, “they have to be good.” McBride explained that when she moved to Valley City for softball, the thing she missed most was all the hugs she would get from not only her family but her hundreds of friends as well.

Adjusting to the lack of hugs has been helpful with support from McBride’s new softball team at VCSU. Referring to her team, McBride giggles, “a couple of us like hugs, so every day we give each other a hug, or two. That makes us feel better.” Not only does McBride have to adjust to a new school, team, and being away from home, but she also has to adjust to the new level of play at VCSU. For the last two years, McBride has been a softball star at Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids. She was the only one in Minnesota history (that the coaches are aware of) to be named to the All-American Team for two years in a row. She was at the top of the national rankings as a pitcher at the division three junior college level with over 300 strikeouts and less than 40 walks in a single season. “I know I won’t have the same stats here, but I will just try my best.”

Excited for the new experiences and seasons to come, McBride will continue to have laugh, hug, and aim for success.

This past Wednesday night November 4^th, 2010 3 great comedians presented at Vangstasd Auditorium which is on the Valley City State University Campus, VCSU Theatre produced the show. Will Spotted Bear Henning opened the show as the emcee, Adam Quesnell was the feature act, and Bengt Washburn was the headliner. All of the comedians made the evening fun and entertaining. By telling hilarious stories. Bengt told a story about different countries and how clean they are and unclean they were. The crowd was welcomed with some exciting music at the beginning. All of the individual were dressed causal which made you feel relaxed and were able to really take in the show and enjoy it. The lighting in Vangstad was fantastic, everyone had a great seat. The highlight of the night was Bengt Washburn from Germany, originally from Utah. He came up with all type of topics to talk about and put all of the viewers in stitches!!!

I felt everyone enjoyed the night, there were individual of all ages that attended and there was a great turnout. Each of the comedians kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Because you never knew what they were going to say next!

Valley City residents and Valley City State University students were treated to a night of laughter and fun Wednesday, courtesy of VCSU Theatre.

At 7:30 pm, people started to file in to Vangstad Auditorium at Valley City State University Campus. Vangstad is a beautiful auditorium adorned with brilliant stained glass windows and sculptures. Everyone was able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and instrumental music playing in the background. Tickets were inexpensive at $4 for students and $8 for general admission.

Host, Will Spotted Bear, got things going with help from up and coming comedian Adam Quesnell. Bengt Washburn was the headliner. Washburn, originally from Utah, came all the way from Germany to share with Valley City residents his knack for making people laugh. Washburn has already established himself having been on Comedy Central and The Late Show with Craig Fergusen. He also was the winner of the San Francisco International Comedy Competition.

Will Spotted Bear really delivered and kept the audience entertained. He joked about recently learning of his Native American heritage.

Quesnell, an up and coming comedian was also able to keep the audience laughing. You could tell that he was still new to the comedy scene, as they were some awkward moments, but he still did a great job. I think he kind of held back because there was a small child in attendance.

Washburn was great and kept the audience in stitches. His jokes of life in Germany and the difference between a married couple and engaged couple were hysterical. He is also a Mormon and joked of his years when he was in Seattle on mission.

The show was great and I have to applaud the comedians for giving the audience a night of laughter and fun.

The Addiction of Bow Hunting

Bow hunting can become an addiction for which you don’t have to go to rehab. Steve McKiver, an avid bow hunter, spoke about how his love for bow hunting started and became a passion for him.

Sitting in the fenced in yard watching Steve McKiver and his wife Diane practicing their bow shot, he explained, “I started bow hunting as a teenager. My dad gave me his old bow, it was a Bear, and it didn’t even have sights on it. He put up his old tree stand for me about 30ft. off the ground and after that I was on my own. I loved sitting up in a tree and seeing all kind of animals go by. As I got older it was just nice to have some quiet time to myself. I went out almost every night.” McKiver went on to say that the challenge of getting the deer to come to you is the best part, as well as getting to see many other animals. He told me one night he decided to sit on the ground and a skunk came and curled up next to his leg. Laughing, he said, “I snuck out really slowly.” McKiver explained that he enjoys bow hunting more than rifle hunting for deer because you have to outsmart them, but he still goes rifle hunting with his dad because it is something they enjoy doing together, but bow hunting is what he waits for every fall. McKiver recalled one night sitting in his stand under a full moon, he was getting ready to leave because it was too late to shoot and three large bucks came under his stand. Even though he could not shoot, he explained the adrenaline rush was awesome and just sat there until his worried mother came looking for him and scared them off. McKiver elaborated saying it’s that kind of experiences that makes all the times you never see anything worth it.

When asked how he learned the art of bow hunting, McKiver said, “It is just trial and error. I read articles about it and just kept trying different things until something worked for me.” He explained that “Bow hunting can get very expensive, but I have found that simple basic techniques work the best for me.” McKiver said that a good cover scent and rattling is what he likes to use. He explained that he uses several different cover scents and or attractants depending on what time of the season it is.

McKiver has tried to encourage anyone interested in bow hunting. He has gotten several of his in-laws involved in the sport. McKiver said, “I used to just take my wife, Diane, with me and bought her a bow after she showed interest in getting her own bow. She really fell in love with it and talked her sister, Lisa, into getting a bow. The first year they went out together they both got nice bucks. Now she goes with her sister and brother on a hunting trip every fall for the last few years. It is really satisfying to know that I had a part in that.” Diane said, “It really is a great bonding experience for me. When we go rifle hunting it is always in a big group with cousins and there is so much commotion, but when we bow hunt it is just us. It gives us a chance to catch up on what’s going on with each other.”

McKiver finished by saying that if you like to hunt you should really give bow hunting a try. It really is an additive sport that leaves you wanting more. Diane added that once you start you will be hooked, but not to worry you won’t get in trouble for this addiction.

A Unique Look At Abstract Art

Take a new look at some unique functional art. Furniture, such as end tables, coffee tables, and entertainment centers, are all art pieces by Valley City native Dave Lewellyn, artist and Professor of Visual Arts at Bismarck State College.

Lewellyn, via phone interview, said he first started doing beaver wood furniture after watching a log furniture show. Lewellyn stated, “I was out fishing along the Sheyenne River and got the idea when I saw beaver sticks everywhere.” Darren Hampson, a childhood friend and fishing buddy, often joins Lewellyn in the hunt for beaver sticks. Hampson said, “It is really amazing to see what Dave will come up with. I saw a wine rack he made and couldn’t believe how neat it was.” Lewellyn elaborated that after running out of creative ideas for his furniture, he decided at 31 years old to go back to college so he could learn to be more creative. Lewellyn attended Bismarck State College from ’01 to ’03 then transferred to North Dakota State University, where he earned his art degree. Lewellyn said that his thirst for new ideas is what originally sent him back to school, but his creativity expanded into painting, sculpture, and photography as his college career advanced. Lewellyn said, “My main focus is on the beaver stick art and furniture, but I get bored and like to switch sculpting, painting, or photography. I just do what I’m in the mood for at the time.” Lewellyn stated that his favorite genre of art is abstract expressionism and he applies that to all forms of his artwork. He is an intuitive artist and explained that there is no objective, one idea inspires another and flows from there.

Lewellyn distributes his art via the internet. He explained that there is a website where artists can register to dispense their work. Artists are informed of exhibitions and art shows that pertain to their personal form of art. Lewellyn has participated in an exhibition in New York City and has one scheduled in Texas for Design America. Lewellyn explained further that there are also judged art exhibitions that artists have to apply and be accepted into the art show. He stated that artists win prizes for their work. Lewellyn said, “I was accepted to a juried art exhibition in Montana about a year ago, but didn’t win. It was really a great experience to be showing my art with some of the top artist in the country though.” Lewellyn’s artwork is also available on his own personal website, at northdakotanart.com.

Lewellyn is currently living in Bismarck, ND, where he is a visual arts professor at BSC. He said that he never planned on being a teacher and that it was all accidental. Lewellyn and Andrea, his wife, both graduated from NDSU and wanted to move back to Bismarck to be closer to family. He explained that Andrea was eight months pregnant and we wanted to move before the baby came. She ended up going into labor a month early and they still hadn’t found a place to live or work yet. Lewellyn said, “A friend visited us in the hospital and told us about a house that turned out to be perfect. The next day another friend let me know about a teaching position at BSC He stating, “It was all fate. I never planned on being a drawing teacher.” Lewellyn hopes to expand the art program, and help students learn abilities that will benefit them in their future careers.

More than seventy students, faculty, and community members gathered in the Valley City State University student center Monday evening to hear guest speaker Josh Boschee discuss the topic of growing up gay in North Dakota.

Sponsered by the What in the World is Going On campus community group, the meeting dealt with family, spirituality, and community issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals living here in North Dakota.

“He approached the issues in a very non threatening way and evoked experiences that a lot of people have had in common (gay or straight) and I think that was a neat bridge building device,” said Dr. Lynne Isaacson, Associate Professor of Social Science at VCSU. “He focused on so many aspects of the lives of gay and lesbian people,” agreed Ben Fergesun of Valley City, “as well as his own personal life and his experiences in coming out. This certainly is an issue for people in North Dakota because it’s not something a lot of people talk about.”

Boschee shared his personal experiences growing up in Minot North Dakota and the pressures and relationship challenges he faced as a young person. Although his family was accepting of him, he feels that their response was not typical to what is experienced by many LGBT individuals in North Dakota and that is causing people who could be productive citizens here to instead leave the state. “We have a strong faith community as well as a conservative environment here,” explained Boschee, “so a lot of times people will be closeted here, but once they’ve left they’ll come out. I think if our state were to make a statement by passing policies that were supportive of all North Dakotans it would help young people who want to stay here.”

Many attendees were surprised to learn that Senate Bill 2278 (2009 Legislative Assembly) that amends the ND Human Rights Act and Fair Housing Act to make it illegal to discriminate in housing, employment, credit transactions, and public accommodations based on sexual orientation (gender identity / expression) passed the ND Senate 27 to 19, but was defeated in the ND House of Representatives, 34 to 54.

I just saw it as a fairness thing,” said Representative Phil Mueller who supported the legislation. “We don’t discriminate against those who are white, black, Muslim, Jewish, or Catholic, so why would we think it is ok to discriminate against this group . . ., that’s what it came down to for me. If it comes down again that’s where I’ll be again. We don’t do much by revolution in Bismarck; it’s more of an evolutionary process. There will come a time, if it doesn’t happen in this coming session it will happen in another session, that we will not be discriminating based on sexual orientation.

While working for change in state law, Boschee also hopes to challenge individuals to become more aware of their feelings and attitudes on the subject. “The only place we can create real change is in ourselves so my challenge to individuals is, if they have certain ideas of what being gay is or if they harass people because they are lesbian, that they really check that and see where that is coming from and then create a change internally. I’m not asking them to sign a petition or to agree with what I’m saying, but rather to think about where those things come from, and then as people become more comfortable and are able to confront issues that they are not comfortable with or that don’t align with their values, to have a respect and fairness and then continue to move forward.”

Boshee also discussed where stereotypes come from and how they are reinforced. “Discrimination and homophobia is taught somewhere, and kids pick up on right and wrong and how it is defined in their family, where they go to worship, or their daycare or school. What statements are made in these places can make a big impact on how young people perceive LGBT people.”

Josh Boschee is the co-chair of the NDSU Pride Network as well as the facilitator of the NDSU Safe Zone Ally program. He is also a board member of the Pride Collective & Community Center, a volunteer with the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition, and the Commissioner of the Fargo Human Relations Commission.

Cattle rustling continues on

Buying and selling cattle is extremely important. Because it not only provides income for all individuals involved. Also, the end result is someone has a meal, such as a sirloin steak or hamburger. But there can be some people that try to through a curve ball into this process to make everything more complicated, for instance, a person trying to sell cows that do not belong to them.

In an email message from Ray Erbele, part owner of Napoleon Livestock in Napoleon, ND says “Selling livestock that does not belong to you has gone on for many years”. This issue is called theft; another common name for this crime is cattle rustling. His email also stated that during previous years cattle operations had to come up with a system to try to reduce this crime. The cattle industry started something called branding. Which are symbols that are burnt into the cattle hide/skin the instrument that they use is called a branding iron. According to Leroy Miedema, “Back in the old Western days they would keep the branding irons hot to brand by building two or three fires so they could have four or five branding irons at a time and could keep rotating them through the fire to keep them hot” In this technological world we live in today, they now have branding irons that are 110 volt and they plug it into an outlet, and a generator is brought out to a pasture.

The men who come to sale barns to check these brands are called brand inspectors. They are from the North Dakota Stockmen’s association, and have law enforcement abilities. According to Erbele, “Sometime, through the grazing period, cattle end up in someone else's pasture.” according to Erbele. “Unknowingly, perhaps to both parties, the animal is brought to the market.” If an honest mistake like this occurs the brand inspector will not let the funds made from that individual cow be given to that particular person because he does not have a brand release (bill of sale). The true owner would be contacted and be given the funds made. If the brand inspector feels it was a theft case he would press charges. Erbele feels the process is simple. “These documents serve a purpose similar to a car title. Simply, proof of ownership.”

Profile of Mr. Hoff

The person that I did a profile on is Mr. Hoff, I did an in- person interview with him. Interviewing him in person, I learned a lot about him and also his office had a lot of pictures of things that he is in involved with such as space related pictures. I learned that He has been in the educational field for 30 some years. According to Mr. Hoff He is the utility person here because he essentially has training in all sciences. I learned that he also helps with educational and geology classes. I also learned that he enjoys upland hunting the most. Since he has been at VCSU he has done a fair amount of traveling. When he came to VCSU he had been in all 50 states and has been in all of the continents except Antarctica.

Also, he enjoys muscle cars. Listening to Mr. Hoff I learned he is an individual that has a wealth of information and I feel that he is person that likes to share the information and the good experiences that he has observed with all of his travels so others can learn and have an appreciation for other parts of the world. Also, I feel it is important for people to listen to Instructors such as Mr. Hoff because the way the world and society has become there is so much technology, computers, news and etc. Which is good but it also takes away from personal experiences which can me more interesting or helpful then reading a document or a story. Also, according to Dr. Stickler “Mr. Hoff is a true professional he goes about his job at VCSU in a dignified and a knowledgeable manner.” Lastly, after hearing that quote from Dr. Stickler I feel that what I said in this profile is all wrapped in that quote.

VCSU Football: Senior Day

If you were a senior on a college sports team and put in a full career of 4 or 5 years without scoring any points or even ever seeing the field how would you feel? Well on Saturday all of the senior VCSU Vikings were able to find the endzone and score.

On Saturday, the Valley City Vikings were able to find their second win of the season whooping on the Dakota State Trojans 54-10. Is this going to be the spark that helps lift the Vikings for the rest of the season? The next two weeks they will face the Mayville Comets and the Jamestown Jimmies, which are both away games.

After the game Jordan Backstrom gave some very good input on this last home game of the season. Backstrom, a running back and wide receiver for the VCSU Vikings, is playing in what could be his final year for the Vikings. Backstrom grew up in Maddock North Dakota living and working on his family farm. Jordan was involved with sports at a young age and has been playing football for over 11 years. He has contributed a touchdown in almost every game this season as well as closing in on his 1000 yards rushing in his college career. The opening drive proved to be very important and well executed. “We had 0 penalties and drove the field quite well on the ground as well as in the air. Scoring on the first drive was very important for us at home to get the ball rolling. Letheo Proctor had a few big catches while making guys miss for big yardage”, stated Backstrom. People may have noticed in previous games that the defense will start out great and get quite a few stops but the offense has been slow to start which eventually tires out the defense. A large portion of Valley City’s points came in the first quarter, while holding the opponent to only 10 points in the game is quite impressive. Consistency from the receiving and ground game from the start was one of the main keys to this explosive game from the Viking offense.

Throughout the game it was all Valley City both on offense and defense who ending up winning 54-10. However this game wasn’t only about winning. The game was also “Senior day” where playing time was emphasized towards the seniors. This is something that Coach Mac has been known to do in previous years. “All three of the seniors that were on offense were able to play and score a touchdown in the game”, said Backstrom. “It was so good to see them get a win out there today, everytime we lose or do bad I just want to get back in there and help out. It is always hard to see our team losing so seeing them win today was awesome”, Matthew Barba, an ex-D lineman for the Vikings commented. “ I am excited to see what they can do the rest of the season”.

This Saturday the Valley City Vikings will head to Mayville to take on the Comets to try and bring their record to 3-5 on the season.
